外语系的前身是唐山师范专科学校英语系,自2000年开始独立招收英语本科生,到目前为止共有10届英语本科毕业生。2003年和2004年分别开设了德语和日语两个非师范类专业,隔年招生。自2011年起连年招生。

外语系下设11个教研室.现有专任教师78人,其中具有高级职称的 21 人,中级职称的 53人;具有硕士学位教师32人,正在攻读博士学位教师1人,攻读硕士学位教师41人。近年来,外语系教师出版了编著、译著8部,参编教材7部,公开发表学术论文百余篇,承接国家级科研课题1项;省级科研课题4项;3名教师入选唐山市社科联百名专家队伍。

在课程设置方面,三个专业都根据语言学习的特点,除开设有加强听、说、读、写、译基本功训练的课程外,还开设有提高学生素养和人文知识的文学、语言学和文化类课程,同时有科技、经贸和商务方面的应用型课程。英语专业作为师范类专业,增设了教师教育类课程和教师基本功训练课程。我系还于2009年9月招收英语专业(国际商务方向)非师范类本科生。总之,学生修完全部课程后,能够既有扎实的语言基础和广博的文化知识,又能够熟练运用语言在教育、经贸、文化、外事和科技等部门从事教学,翻译、管理工作。

外语系不断加强教风和学风建设,考研率逐年攀升。就业前景良好。第一届2003级德语专业学生一次就业率为87.5%,达到教育部规定A级标准,其中,有8名学生一次性与合资企业中国北车集团唐山轨道车辆有限公司签订就业协议,开辟了我院就业工作中的先河,受到燕赵都市报、唐山晚报等多家媒体的关注和报道。

外语系已初步形成了多层次、多形式的办学格局,已经成为河北省复合型外语人才培养和培训的重要基地。

Originated from the English Department of Tangshan Teachers Junior College, the Foreign Language Department of TNU(Tangshan Normal University) started the intake of its own four-year students of English major in the year of 2000. So far it has totally 10 graduations of English major students. Two non-teacher education majors—German and Japanese, founded in 2003 and 2004, respectively recruited students every other year since the day they were set up. But from the year of 2011 they were authorized to intake new students every year.

Now the Foreign Language Department(FLD) incorporates 11 teaching and researching groups. 78 full-time teachers are working for it, including 21 professors/ associate professors, and 53 instructors. 32 out of the 78 have gained master's degree. Besides, one is working towards her doctor’s degree, 41 for their master’s degree. In recent years, teachers in FLD have compiled or translated 8 books, edited 7 books with others, and published 100 more academic papers. In addition, FLD has completed one national and four provincial scientific research projects. Three teachers have been chosen to be the Top 100 Experts of the Federation of Social Science in Tangshan.

In terms of curriculum, all of the three majors( English, German and Japanese )offer, rather than basic courses such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, choices in literature, linguistics and culture so as to improve the students’ knowledge of humanities and to develop their personalities. To reach this goal, practical courses in science and technology, trade and business have been made to be part of the alternatives, too. In 2009 FLD started the recruitment of four-year students majoring in International Business. In a word, students completing their studies in FLD can not only possess a foreign language and extensive cultural knowledge but also apply what they learn to teaching, translation and management in fields such as education, trade, culture exchange, foreign affairs and scientific research.

FLD has been working to continuously strengthen the construction of academic atmosphere in both teaching and learning. Under this circumstance, the Postgraduate Qualifying Examination rate grows up every year, which makes a promising employment foreground to students. Employment rate of the first German graduates recruited in the year of 2003 is 87.5%, which reaches the top standard formulated by Ministry of Education. Among them, 8 students signed employment agreement together with the joint venture CNR Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd., which has made a history in Tangshan Normal University. This, therefore, has drawn focus and report from media like Yanzhao Metropolis Daily and Tangshan Evening.

By now the FLD has formed a multi-level and multi-form teaching pattern,which makes itself an important base to foster and train compound foreign language talents in Hebei province.
